IN MILAN DESIGN WEEK 2022

Pianca revealed new collections at Salone del Mobile last June, designed by Cristina Celestino, Raffaella Mangiarotti and Federica Biasi

three female designers who are outstanding in their profound approach to design and continuous experimentation,

inside a stand designed in the style of a Palladian villa.

Rafaella Mangiarotti
Federica Biasi

The cultured, elegant style of the stand is the setting for furniture inspired by the soft forms of nature and the beauty hidden within the simplicity of things. Among the new pieces on display is the Peonia collection by Cristina Celestino, consisting of a sofa, chaise-longue and armchair, three sculptural and embracing pieces of furniture. “The shell of the armchair is composed of different surfaces, arranged in an evocative crescendo. The sofa extends to create two seating zones in a graceful, regal ensemble”, says the designer, and explains, “the whole structure is fabric upholstered, eliminating the classic division between base and seat, where the modular geometric shapes can be arranged in multiple, strikingly different ways”. Cristina Celestino also designed the Calatea chair and pouf which add to the armchair of the same name to form a complete family of

living room furniture.

The new products also include the Bricola bed and boiserie panel set by Raffaella Mangiarotti, who says, “Collaborating with Pianca was interesting, because I was able to explore new paths and work with the company’s technical office to create new designs and products of the finest quality”. And the new pieces on display at the Pianca stand also include the Naan armchair with its soft, delicate contours, designed by Federica Biasi. “I wanted to create a harmonious product that does not steal the limelight, but blends into living room, waiting room and entrance area décor with timeless style”, explains the designer. “Naan is a product that is muted, but not silent, inviting and with a boldly defined character”.

Pianca explores the contemporary living concept, drawing inspiration from the environment all around us and its multiple facets. Elevating the ancestral values of tradition for a new period of rebirth. The stand will also be furnished with the new Pianca Studio furniture, the Murano wardrobe and the Teatro walk-in closet.

Peonia Sofa, Chaise-longue and Armchair, design by Cristina Celestino

The new seat designed by Cristina Celestino for Pianca unfurls like a flower in Spring. And it is indeed nature, with her perfect geometries, that provides the inspiration for Peonia’s creative genesis. Sculptural and inviting, it captures the eternal becoming of every living thing in its forms; the tension to a constant and inescapable perpetual movement. The shell of the armchair is composed of different surfaces, arranged in an evocative crescendo that recalls the petals of a corolla. The sofa of the same design becomes an elegantly regal seat. The modular geometric forms allow infinite combinations to created, experimenting with various levels and heights, solids and voids. The entire structure is fabric upholstered in a continuum of colours and textures in the base and seat.

Calatea Chair and Pouf, design by Cristina Celestino

Details that transform into distinctive features in a new take on proportions and function. Designed by Cristina Celestino, the design of the Calatea chair with its natural shapes and the pouf is inspired by the evergreen tropical plant after which they are named. The ergonomic shape of the chair’s matt lacquer polyurethane backrest provides embracing, comfortable support, and has an unusual and distinctive feature in the shape of a small fissure on the upper section of the backrest. The backrest cushion is optional: padded like the seat, it makes Calatea even more enveloping, ensuring absolute comfort. The pouf, coordinating with the chair, is a versatile piece of furniture that becomes a practical footrest when placed near armchairs and sofas. It can be upholstered in all fabrics of the Pianca collections, and the legs are available in lacquered open pore finish or solid wood. The Calatea chair and pouf go with the armchair of the same name whose 2017 début marked the start of the collaboration between Cristina Celestino and Pianca.

Bricola Bed and Boiserie, design by Raffaella Mangiarotti

A simple, yet effective structure like the one used for bricole, the wooden nautical markers found in the Venetian lagoon. Bricola is a flexible modular system that creates an elegant backdrop for the bedroom area. It consists of three or five panels, available in two different heights, made using bonded fabric that guarantees stiffness and stability. The broad wooden headboard is finished with a soft fabric and has two moveable side wings that create intimacy. Its light design and curvy padding which tapers off near the legs, giving the bed a sleek, elegant line. The boiserie, available in several sizes, is upholstered on both sides, front and back, so that the bed can also stand in the centre of the room to visually separate spaces. The structure is made of round solid wood sections: the joints, elegant details with a metallic finish, allow the modules to rotate and alter the arrangement. Bricola can be finished in the whole range of Pianca smooth fabrics and paired with a co-ordinated bed frame. The upholstery is available in a wide range of fabrics and interchangeable eco-leathers which make it a versatile product.

Naan Armchair, design by Federica Biasi

Sometimes, the secret lies in simplicity. That is how it is for the renowned Indian naan bread, and so it is for the armchair of the same name, designed by Federica Biasi: a compact, embracing volume with soft, gentle contours. The structure develops from a square base with rounded corners into one single block form, projecting it into the space, with no interruption, creating an inviting volume. Slim, tapered armrests and backrest enclose a generous seat. The absence of voids gives the armchair a precise, elegant look of balanced form and geometry, both visible and invisible. The Naan armchair is also available as a swivel chair and is a product that suits any space, conceived for home living areas, public spaces and hospitality venues. Its intrinsic simplicity makes it a piece of furniture that matches a wealth of decor styles.
